The school has taken significant steps to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner environment. This is a way of teaching our students the importance of taking little steps towards creating a better world. GREEN TEEN- The Eco Club in school was created in the year 2011. Students of classes VI-XII are part of this club and are working passionately towards protecting the environment. The members of GREEN TEEN CLUB have vowed to further initiatives taken up by the school and do their best towards conservation of environment. Few projects undertaken are:

SOLAR PANELS

The school has installed solar panels to generate electricity. This has made the school self sufficient in its energy requirements, and now it is no longer dependent on BSES for its electricity. Rather, all extra electricity produced is channelled to BSES and this helps raise our credit rating with them. Our students are conscientiously about switching off all electrical appliances when not in use.

Sustainability-The Smart way

PAPER RECYCLING

The paper recycling plant is put to its optimum use by recycling all the waste paper generated in the classrooms, offices and other areas of the school. This recycled papers is then made into folders, envelopes, cards etc which are used as gifts and invites for events. Our school is a ‘No Polybag’ zone. Students make paper bags which they distribute to the shopkeepers of C- block market, Vasant Vihar. The school stationer also uses only paper bags to pack purchases by students and parents.

Students from classes VIII-XII of Art Society and NSS put up a stall for selling hand made products, folders, envelopes, note pads etc. made from the recycled paper

WATER CONSERVATION

RAIN WATER HARVESTING PITS
An initiative of the Eco club of the school, the rain water harvesting pits started on a small scale in the year 2000. There are 14 rainwater harvesting pits on campus that have helped in increasing the water table of the region.

WATER BANKS

Taking a step further in our attempt to conserve water, we have put water collection tubs in inner atrium . At dispersal time, the students empty the unused water from their water bottles into these tubs which is then used to water the plants in the school premises

FLORAL TRAIT

School floral was identified taking help of students and Taxonomist from diversity park, Vasant Vihar. Each identified plant has been notified using floral plates.

E-WASTE DISPOSAL

The Green Teen collaborated with Nokia in 2012 and started collecting E-waste such as mobile phones, chargers, keyboards, headphones etc. This waste is picked up by Nokia to be disposed off in a scientific manner. Our school has been conferred with the ‘Platinum Status’ for its contribution to ‘Nokia Planet ke Rakhwale’ campaign for collecting large amount of E-waste. Since then, the gangs of Green Teen has been collecting E-waste on a regular basis.

WASTE SEGREGATION
Our schools has painted dustbins for separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable matters.   In the school, we have a bigger waste collection area which has partitions for biodegradable and non –biodegradable, paper, plastics and glasses. The students of classes VI-XII pick the waste  from all and segregate them in biodegradable, non-biodegradable, paper, plastic, glass   and put  it in a bigger area which is collected by rag picker every Sunday to make his job easier.

PROJECT SEARCH
In collaboration with TERI, the Green Teen team work towards collecting tetra packs from the school on a regular basis. A tetra train has been designed which the students takes round around the school during the recess and collect tetra packs. They also check the taps and flushes in the washrooms on a regular basis. The problems for instance, lack of availability of toilet papers in the washrooms etc. are resolved once the students inform about it to the concerned authorities. This is done to ensure sanitation. Also, due to the efforts of TERI we are a part of Resource Centre for Excellence (RCE).Under RCE we have been regularly conducting VCs with a high school in Netherlands. Last session we discussed the water problem in both countries and this session we are recycling waste materials and creating new products out of it. Lately, we recorded a video about what we did earlier and, what are we planning to do in the future. This video will be showcased at the international conference.
