REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY

Students of Tagore International School, East of Kailash, visited Ramsinghpura village, Alwar district in Rajasthan as part of a Community Outreach Programme, on 12 October 2018.The students, who are members of the Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurship Clubs of the school decided to carry out a special drive for the underprivileged tribal girls and their education.

The school partnered with SPECTRA, (Society for Public Education Cultural Training & Rural Action), an NGO that works extensively to promote the cause of tribal women in Rajasthan. Girls of this village are often confined to traditional roles in their homes. With their limited opportunities they fail to enjoy any form of independence.

To give these girls new opportunities to learn and to motivate them to think differently about their future, the students of TIS brainstormed and came up with sustainable business projects which were feasible to run in the school to raise funds for their programme. The members of the Entrepreneurship Club ran an ice cream parlour business during recess and PTM days in the school premises and those of the Youth Leadership Club sold self – made eco-friendly, tribal themed products to the parent community and student fraternity. Displaying a strong entrepreneurial temperament both the groups were successful in raising substantial profits for their cause. With additional monetary help from the school, the students were able to purchase some bicycles out of which they gifted a few to the girls of the Bheel tribe of the area to enable them to commute to their schools without hindrance. They also visited them in their village, spent quality time and shared a meal with them. This experience transformed the thought process of the students who are very enthusiastic to take this endeavour forward with even more gusto and determination.
